Aerial view of Crystal II Air Base at Frobisher Bay, 1946. Although not as lavish as described in the British high commissioner’s report, this was a sizable airfield that was never used to ferry planes to England. According to the agreement signed in 1944, the base was to be turned over to the RCAF after the war. This did not happen and instead a reduced USAAF staff remained and began to upgrade the buildings. Abandoned trucks and other debris can be seen on the lower left of the photograph. Wartime agreements did not require the U.S. to remove waste or debris from a military site.
